Know as ‘the Pearl of the Danube’, Budapest Hungary is made up of three distinct towns: Obuda and Buda (the historic medieval city on Castle Hill) are on the west bank of the River Danube, and Pest (the administrative and commercial city) is on the east. In 1873, the three towns merged, and today large areas of architectural, archeological and cultural importance are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Budapest Hungary

The heart of Budapest Hungary, around the Castle Hill area, is a beautiful part of the city, despite suffering many times from invasions by Celts, Romans, Huns, Ottomans and Austrians. In World War II, the city was partly destroyed by Allied air raids, then besieged during the Battle of Budapest when the attacking Russians and defending German and Hungarian troops caused major damage. The Hungarians, however, have always rebuilt their city and today it is as lovely as ever.

The View Of Budapest Hungary | Source : en.wikipedia.org

Buda Castle, on the southern tip of Castle Hill next to the old Castle District, is the historical seat of the Hungarian kings in Budapest and today houses the Historical Museum of Budapest Hungary. It display marvelous paintings, including those of Eastern European and Hungarian artists as well as modern artists such as Picasso and Lichtenstein. Nearby, the neo Gothic Mathis Church has a colorful roof, and a wonderful interior which was renovated in the 19th century back to its 13th-century splendor. The gallery contains sacred relics and medieval stone carvings, along with replicas of the Hungarian coronation jewels.

In Pest, be sure to visit the National Museum dedicated to the history and natural history of the country. St Stephen’s Basilica, with its neo-Renaissance dome, offers 360-degree views of the city for those with a head for heights. The National Opera House is spectacularly ornate, built during the glory days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, while the parliament building is well worth seeing, as are the Hungarian crow jewels on display there.

If you tire of cultural sightseeing, visit Margit-signet, one of the islands in the Danube which is a popular recreational area for tourists and local alike, with its park. Japanese garden, small zoo and musical fountain.

Another island in the Danube, Obudai-sziget, hosts the Sziget Festival every year in August, one of Europe’s largest music and cultural events.

Bucharest Romania has always worried about its place in the club of European capitals. It still relishes its nickname of ‘Little Paris’, earned between the two World Wars when its elegant avenues were thronged by the sophisticated elite of Vienna, Prague and Berlin, and French was virtually the language of government. Hitler and Ceausescu dumped on that aspiration, but having seen off both, and survived a distinctly wobbly decade of rudderless hardship in the 1990s, Bucharest is finally growing into its new shoes. The city is enjoying being Romanian for the first time. It has discovered the advantages of belonging to both west and east, and that it doesn’t need to imitate any other culture.

Bucharest Romania

The result are spectacular. Twenty-first century architecture is everywhere piercing the concrete excesses of communism and Ceausescu with steel and glass. Simultaneously, the city has embraced its history, from the Curta Veche – the remains of Bucharest’s medieval royal court – to Lipscani, the recently pedestrianized district which best displays the 19th and early 20th century elegance it once coveted. Along the revitalized Calea Victoriei, Bucharest’s attempt at a Champs Elyssees, beautiful monuments like the imitaton Arc de Triomphe. 18th century churches, and glass-roofed arcades like the Macca-Vilacrosse have been brought back to life.

Izvor, Downtown Bucharest, Romania | Source : en.wikipedia.org

The chain of lakes that crosses the city has the Cismigiu Gardens, built to a German design in 1847, as its recreational centerpiece of waterside cafes and botanical delights. Palatial 19th century buildings like the CEC Palace hold banks and other instituations. Ceausescu destroyed the greater part of Bucharest’s historic centre to build the Central Civiv, the world’s second or third biggest building. The city of Bucharest Romania can’t change it back – but it has learned both to mock its hubris, and to put it to good use.

Re-defined, Bucharest Romania is a terrific demonstration of Romanian potential, and an original new European capital for visitors to enjoy.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bagamoyo Tanzania is the oldest town in Tanzania and one of the most attractive, combining natural beauty with a significant, although sometimes grim, historical heritage.

The palm-studded, white sandy beaches of the area, with the crystalline blue waters of the Indian Ocean lapping on the shore, make for a relaxed atmosphere in Bagamoyo Tanzania. Looking out towards the clear blue sea, it is difficult to tell which century you are in as the traditional hand-built wooden dhows continue to ply the waters. The local fisherman sail in these Arabian-designed craft with their billowing triangular sails aloft, vying for space on the waves among the many dugout canoes. Women wade through the surf with impossibly large piles of laundry or fresh produce carried securely in baskets on their heads.

Bagamoyo Tanzania

Once a busy port and the major slave trading post in East Africa, Bagamoyo Tanzania, meaning ‘lay down your heart’ in Swahili, was the last place slaves stayed in Tanzania before being transported to other countries – largely heading on to Zanzibar or Arab nations. Although the slave trade officially ended here in 1873, slaves continued to be sold and traded through to the end of the nineteenth century. It was not uncommon to see multitudes of them, shackled at the neck, converged on the docks awaiting their fate. At the time, Livingstone calculated that for every slave who reached the coast, ten did not.

Bagamoyo Tanzania Missionary Building | Source : en.wikipedia.org

Relatively untouched by time, the town of Bagamoyo Tanzania largely comprises stone architecture that has been influenced by its Arab and Indian traders, the German colonial government and Christian missionaries who settled here. One of the main features of the buildings is the elaborately carved wooden doors. Outside of the town, you will gradually encounter more traditionally African houses with fences made of palm fronds.

Historically significant sites include the nearby thirteenth-century Islamic Kaole Ruins, built of coral and comprising two mosques and several tombs.

In the 1800s, Christian missionaries established a ‘Freedom Village’ here to protect freed slaves and the Roman Catholic Mission is also worth a visit; it is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in East and Central Africa, built in 1868. In 1874, Dr Livingstone’s body was kept here before its return to England for burial.

Bagamoyo Tanzania is also home to the most famous art college in Tanzania, Chuo cha Sanaa. Students from all over the world come here to learn traditional Tanzanian drumming, sculpture, carving and painting. While you are here you can arrange to take a class or hear an African drumming performance at the college.

When To Go To Bagamoyo Tanzania

During the dry season – June – October and January-February.

Where Is Bagamoyo Tanzania

50 km (31 mi) north of the capital, Dar es Salaam.

Bagamoyo Tanzania Also Known As

Bagamoyo means ‘lay down your heart’ in Swahili.

What Is Bagamoyo Tanzania Known For

The town itself has pristine beaches and a pleasant downtown area. The surrounding areas have ruins, a mission and it is worth your while to take a trip in a dhow down the Ruvu River Delta where you will hopefully spot some hippos and other wildlife.

Historical Significance Of Bagamoyo Tanzania

Bagamoyo is the oldest town in Tanzania and it once served as a large port for the sale and trading of slaves.

As you head towards the market you’ll weave through crowds of men on bicycles with fresh bundles of coriander in their baskets, fish mongers, men tanning leather, shining brass pans or carving wood. The enticing smells of lavender, thyme, saffron and mint waft through the hazy sunshine, as you stop to admire the Grand Mosque with its yellow minaret and teal-green houndstooth tiling.

On a clear day, the snowy peaks of the Djebel Toubkal can be seen hovering in the distance past the gates of the Kasbah. The native women, the Roudani, can be seen in the early evenings chatting in lines around the ramparts in their colourful clothes. They look, and often sound, like an exotic species of bird as they wander around gossiping and laughing.

Stop at one of the many reasonably priced cafes and enjoy a snack as you watch daily life unfold, take a caleche, (a horse-drawn carriage), around the city and watch the fading light of sunset highlight the olive trees surrounding the town. Taroudant Morocco is called the “Grandmother of Marrakech” because it looks like a smaller Marrakech with its surrounding ramparts.

Despite a challenge from thrustful Malaga, Seville Spain remains the political, business and cultural capital of southern Spain. It bestrides the busy Guadalquivier River, which is navigable to the Atlantic coast. In common with much of Spain, Seville’s recent economic growth has been rapid and it now sits at the centre of major commercial and industrial conurbation. For all that, evidence of its long history is everywhere, and despite the hustle and bustle of a modern city there are powerful remainders of traditionally flamboyant Spanish life to be found in the many barrios (old quarters) with their narrow streets and charming balconied houses. There are enough sights in Seville to satisfy even the most compulsive heritage addict, and it’s possible to spend days wandering about soaking up the atmosphere.

Seville Spain

The Roman period is represented by various ruins, including an aqueduct. Well-preserved remains of Italica, 8 km (5 mi) out of the city, give a wonderful impression of what Roman Seville (then called Hispalis) must have been like. Moorish influence is also evident, with the Giralda minaret tower being a fine example. Built with sloping ramps to allow the muezzin to ride a horse to the top before calling the faithful to prayer, it was converted to a bell tower for the Cathedral after the Moors were expelled. The 15th century Seville Spain Cathedral itself is a vast medieval Gothic triumph with a stunning, richly gilded interior.

Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, Seville, Spain | Source : en.wikipedia.org

Across from the Cathedral is the Alcazar with its beautiful gardens, developed over the centuries from a Moorish palace, Other special monuments include the 16th century Town Hall and ancient Torre de Oro, a watchtower on the river. The Seville Spain city also has many fine parks and gardens, notably the Maria Luisa Park built for the 1929 Spanish-American World’s Fair.

Population Of Seville Spain

704.000 (2005)

When To Go To Seville Spain

Mild-summer heat in the city can be oppressive, so avoid July and August

Don’t Miss To Visit This Place In Seville Spain

A stroll along the river for some rare peace and quiet and a relaxed view of the city – there are several inviting parks along the way.

The Tapas Tour – invent your own, as nearly every bar offers a selection of these tempting snacks.

A leisurely trot around town in a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Seville’s Holy Week (Semana Santa en Seville) just before Easter, a traditional Spanish festival that is at once both seriously solemn and wonderfully light-hearted.

The Fine Arts Museum in an old friary, horne to Spain’s second-most-important picture collection (after that in Madrid’s Prado).

One of the best of Seville’s many churches – the 13th century Santa Ana in the Triana district, with its outstanding reredos.

You Should Know About Seville Spain

Many a fine opera has been set in the city, including Bizet’s Carmen, Beethoven’s Fidelio, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Marriage of Figaro …. And of course Rossini’s Barber of Seville.

Despite sustaining shocking damage during the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944, Rouen France retained enough exceptional old buildings to show what a wonderful medieval town it once was ang underlined the point by painstakingly rebuilding many casualities of war. It was a capital of Anglo-Norman dynasties that ruled England and much of France from thq 11th to 15th centuries and was therefore one of the largest and most prosperus European cities in the Middle Ages, with the Exchequer of Normandy located in the Rouen Tourist office (or Hotel des Generaux de Finances, as it was called when built, back in 1509).

Rouen France

Sitting proudly beside the River Seine, Rouen’s town centre is largely given over to pedestrian street, some narrow and cobbled, lined with old buildings. There are plenty of typically Norman half-timbered house and some splendid churches. The Palais de Justice is an important example of civic architecture from the late Middle Ages, the vast New Market Hall being the oldest part. Rouen France Cathedral is a superb Gothic edifice with a famous ‘butter tower’. It contains one of Richard the Lionheart’s tombs (there are three in France – this one claiming the best bit, his eponymous heart). Monet did a famous series of paintings of the Cathedral, some of which may be seen in the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. The Gros Horloge is an intriguing 16th-century astronomical clock, recently restored.

City Hall and Church of St. Ouen, Rouen, France | Source : en.wikipedia.org

But Rouen France is more than just a pretty face. To those who have been enjoying the atmospheric city centre, it may come as a surprise to be reminded that this is France’s fourth-largest port city. It’s the closest that container ships can get to Paris and is busy, but well worth seeing after a pleasant stroll along the riverside.

Population Of Rouen France

107.000 (1999)

When To Go To Rouen France

Summer, for the amazing light show called from Monet to Pixels, projected onto the Cathedral’s facade.

Don’t Miss To Visit This Place In Rouen France

A charming reminder of Rouen’s former cloth industry – old watermills along Rue Eau de Robec.

The panoramic view of the city and winding River Seine from the top of St Catherine’s Hill.

The museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, with an eye-catching collection of the characteristic Norman faience pottery for which Rouen was renowed from the 16th to 18th centuries.

A ride round the city’s best sight in a horse-drawn carriage.

The Aitre Saint-Maclou, an extraordinary Plague Cemetery built in 1348, with galleries added in the 16th century – now home to the regional fine arts school.

The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt are the world’s oldest tourist attraction and remain cloaked in mystery. The only one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World in existence, the pyramids continue to amaze and confound archaeologists, physicists and astrologists alike.

The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt

Created within almost pinpoint accuracy, the three structures – Khufu, the oldest and largest; Khafre, which seems taller because it is built on higher ground; and Menkaura, with a base area of less than a quarter of the others – inspire questions about their greater meaning.

The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt | Source : iweddingclub.com

The sides of The Pyramid of Khufu are oriented to within three degrees of true north. The base, with each of its sides measuring 230 m (756 ft), is level to within 1 in (2.6 cm), and the difference in length between each of the four sides is a mere 2 in (5.2 cm) – a minute margin of error. Until the 19th century, the pyramids remained, after nearly 5,000 years, the tallest structure in the world.

At first sight, the pyramids, not unlike the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, can be disappointing. After so many photographs of these hulking structures surrounded by nothing but desert, it is a bit disconcerting to see suburban Cairo virtually resting against the paws of the great Sphinx.

Still, the enchanting half lion (representing royalty), half human (with a traditional headdress symbolising power) figure casts an impressive image, particularly with the shadow of the Great Pyramid of Khufu looming in the near distance. Carved from a single outcrop of bedrock, it is the earliest example of colossal Egyptian sculpture.

Stone from the monuments has been used to erect many of Cairo’s oldest buildings. This destruction continued until the late 19th century when conservation efforts and a resurgence in national pride put a stop to it. Had they not been vandalised, it is believed that the pyramids would remain today much as they were when they were built. As the saying goes, ‘Many fear Time, but Time fears the Pyramids’.

What To Know About The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt

Only 300 tickets are sold a day for each of the two entrances – it is first come, first served – and only two of the three pyramids are open at a time. Go early to get in line.

What To See In The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt

The Great Pyramid, The Egyptian Museum, Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque and The Khan el-Khalili market.

What To Miss From The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt

The evening pyramid light and sound show.

What To Try In The Pyramids Of Giza And The Sphinx In Egypt

Treat yourself to dinner in one of the grand hotels such as the Nubian Village in the Grand Hyatt Hotel and/or take a dinner cruise down the Nile.

Aswan Egypt is the southernmost frontier town in the Egypt, considered the ‘gateway to Africa’. It lies at the first of seven cataracts, or Nile rapids, created by exposed granite that made the river impassable to boats, and thus created a thriving trade centre.

Aswan Egypt

The relaxed atmosphere of this riverside town made Aswan Egypt popular as a winter resort among wealthy Europeans enticed by the setting and the rumours that the dry heat provided a cure for various ailments. Because of the influx of foreigners, a Nile-side Corniche was created, providing moorings for the many steamers.

City Aswan From Nile River In Egypt | Source : en.wikipedia.org

The Aswan Egypt Corniche is the most attractive waterfront boulevard in Egypt and, with its attractive walkways and gorgeous views of palm-covered islands with a backdrop of sandy white hills, has been compared to the French Riviera. It is worth the cost of hiring a felucca and floating amidst the scenery as if in a dream.

At the southern end of the Corniche is the Old Cataract Hotel – famous as one of the locations for the film Death on the Nile. Built in 1899 on a rocky outcrop in the river, its grand pink exterior and Moorish dining halls are a reminder of times past. Its large terrace has been enjoyed by such luminaries as Winston Churchill, Jimmy Carter and the late Princess of Wales.

Sharia el-Souq, a short way inland, is a bustling outdoor market full of vivid colours and the aromas of exotic spices. Traditional food, Nubian jewellery and textiles (as well as the usual tourist souvenirs) should not be missed.

What To See In Aswan Egypt

Sharia el-Souq market, Nubian dancers at the Cultural Centre, the Old Cataract Hotel, the Aswan Museum and Elephantine Island.

Where To Find Aswan Egypt

129 km (80 mi) south of Luxor, 899 km (559 mi) south of Cairo.

Historical Fact Of Aswan Egypt

Aswan is the location of the only granite quarry in Egypt.

Nestled between Serengeti National Park and Lake Manyara National Park, lies the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania, often called ‘The Eighth Wonder of the World’ for its stunning beauty and fabulous wildlife viewing.

It is believed that millions of years ago Ngorongoro was roughly the same size as Mount Kilimanjaro. However, when the volcanic activity subsided, it collapsed, forming the crater – the world’s largest unbroken caldera. The crater is 610 m (2,001 ft) deep and covers an area of 260 sq km (162 sq mi).

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania, the park’s diverse ecosystem includes active volcanoes, mountains, rolling plains, forests, lake dunes and the Olduvai Gorge. The area supports more than 550 species of birds and 115 species of mammals including elephants, cape buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and hippo. It is the only place in Tanzaniawhere you can more or less be guaranteed a sighting of the indigenous black rh

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania | Source : en.wikipedia.org

ino, but you will not find giraffes as the tree-level food is sparse.

Another highlight of the park is the abundance of flamingoes of Lake Magadi on the crater’s floor. The spectacle of a bubble-gum coloured cloud of these magnificent birds against an emerald green backdrop is unforgettable!

The otherworldly scene is punctuated by the sight of Masai tribesmen in their traditional attire, herding cattle, sheep and goats.

In the northern of Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania, and more remote, part of the conservation area are the Olmoti and Empakaai craters, Lake Natron and Oldoinyo Lengai, or the Mountain of God as the Masai call it. East Africa’s flamingoes breed at Lake Natron. On the eastern side of Empakaai are the Engakura ruins, which feature a terraced stone city and a complex irrigation system. The stone buildings are rare because the concept is unusual in this part of Africa.

When To Visit Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania

Ngorongoro is accessible all year round, though during the rainy seasons (April, May and November) the tracks can be muddy.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania Also Known As

‘The Eighth Wonder of the World’.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania Known For

The 16-km (10-mi) diameter volcanic caldera is the land of the Masai, their cattle, and wildlife and it is the only place in Tanzania where you can consistently view black rhinos.

Where To Stay In Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania

A number of lodges and camps on the crater rim are well placed to provide fantastic views of the crater floor.

How Best TO View Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania

Tourists can observe wildlife from their vehicles (4x4s recommended) or go on guided walking safaris.
