Zomba Malawi, The Zomba Plateau, forming the faulted edge of the Great Rift Valley and the Shire lowlands, is a magnificent massif largely forested with cypress, Mexican pine and Mulanje cedar. Its series of small waterfalls and rapids join to form the Mulunguzi.
This tranquil forest reserve, renowned for its temperate climate and natural splendour, is blanketed with wild flowers, ferns, thorn bushes and orchids. The summit is an impressive 1,800m (5,906ft) tower rising to over 2,080m (6,824ft) tall. The face of the southern edge, shadowing the colonial town of Zomba Malawi, is 750m (2,461ft) high.

Queen’s View, named after Queen Elizabeth following her visit in 1957, is said to offer ‘the best view in the whole of the British Empire’. Birds and butterflies hover above as you gaze towards the Mulanje Massif and the city of Blantyre. Emperor’s View, named after Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, has equally awe-inspiring vistas.
Settled in the late 19th century as a temperate alternative to the hot and humid low-lying plains, the colonial town of Zomba Malawi also offers a rewarding experience. The market here is one of the most colourful in Malawi featuring an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables set amidst tinsmiths, second-hand clothes stalls, witch doctors and everything you can imagine in between!
